Controller & Director of Business Operations
Red 5’s open work environment, quirky staff, and cutting-edge goals suit Lori just fine. And the feeling’s more than mutual.
Once employed by Miller and Co., Lori was originally a consultant assigned to help Red 5 with our accounting. Not satisfied with having such a numbers ninja only on Wednesdays, we wisely hired her to look after our money full-time.
And we’re ecstatic to have her in the Tribe. A southern California native, Lori graduated from San Jose State University and knows how to take advantage of the region’s beautiful weather. A former lifeguard and competitive swimmer, Lori spends her free time boating, wakeboarding, and riding dirt bikes.
Perhaps one of her favorite pastimes, however, is No-Limit poker. To Lori, poker isn’t so much about “gambling” as “asset risk management.” If Red 5 ever needs a quick influx of cash, we’re sending her to Vegas!
Q: What is the best hand you have had at poker and lost?
A: One of the most memorable hands I have played was at a home game. It was the first hand in a $50 no-limit Texas Hold-Em tourney with five people. Three of us had pocket pairs fours and sevens, and I had jacks. The flop comes seven, four, jack we all had a set! We all checked trying trap each other. The fourth card, or “turn,” was no help to anyone, and there was a bet, a raise, then a re-raise till eventually we were all in. The set of fours opened up first, then the sevens and then my jacks. At this point, we’re all in awe of the scenario, and I was having fun giving everyone [CENSORED] for thinking they had the best hand. Then, we flipped the river card (5th card) and it was a four which made a four of a kind for the other player. What are the odds?
Q: Chocolate or vanilla ice cream? Discuss.
A: Vanilla, but only if it’s served with root beer. I love root beer floats!
